Just an hour and half away from Istanbul’s busy streets, the Princes’ Islands offer peace, nature, and timeless charm. Once a place of exile for Byzantine princes, today they’re among the city’s most beloved getaways for both locals and visitors. The archipelago consists of nine islands, but only four are open to the public — Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada, and Kınalıada. Ferries depart regularly from Kabataş and Kadıköy, offering a scenic ride across the Marmara Sea.
Büyükada
The largest and most popular of the islands, Büyükada was once a summer retreat for Ottoman aristocrats. You’ll see elegant wooden mansions and quiet streets — no cars are allowed, only electric vehicles. The best way to explore is by bicycle, which you can rent near the ferry pier. At the top of the island lies Aya Yorgi Monastery, offering a spectacular view after a short uphill walk. Büyükada also hosts one of the largest wooden buildings in Europe, once used as a Greek orphanage.
Heybeliada
Known as the greenest and most peaceful island, Heybeliada is perfect for cycling or walking tours. Visit the historic School of Orthodox Theology at the island’s highest point, enjoy the gardens and sea views, and finish with a picnic in Değirmenburnu Park.
Burgazada
The third-largest island, Burgazada remains a favorite escape for locals, it offers quiet charm, scenic streets, and hidden coves ideal for swimming or relaxing by the sea.
Kınalıada
The smallest and closest island to Istanbul, Kınalıada has a relaxed local vibe. Its small, calm beaches are less crowded — perfect for a peaceful swim in the Marmara Sea.
